About Benito (Tito)

Hi, I’m Tito – your loyal shadow with a heart of gold and a serious love for the outdoors.

You might see me and think I’m just another big, handsome shepherd mix. But there’s more to me than that. I’m a gentle soul who’s learning every day how great the world can be when you have people who believe in you. I wasn’t always this confident—but thanks to my foster family, I’m blossoming into a calm, curious, and affectionate guy who’s ready to find my forever home.

I go by Tito—not Benito so much. I’m about a year old, and while I’ve still got that young-dog energy, I’ve mellowed a lot. These days I prefer long sniffari walks, exploring new routes, lounging outside with my toys, and watching the world go by. I’m not a runner (definitely not your next jogging partner), but I’m down for adventures—as long as we take our time and I get to soak it all in.

I’ve come such a long way. I used to be jumpy around new people and situations, but now I’ll happily accept pets or treats from strangers, walk calmly past daycares and busy sidewalks, and politely ask for attention by offering a paw. I still get a little startled by sudden, loud noises or zoomy bikes from behind (who doesn’t?), but I’m learning to pause, observe, and keep it cool. Treats help, of course—I’m very food-motivated and love a good liver snack.

I’m living with other dogs right now and really enjoy playing with them (especially the bigger ones). Sometimes I get carried away during play, but I’m learning to read the room. I don’t love barky little dogs in my face, but I’ll tolerate them with a bit of management and patience. Cats? Jury’s still out—I haven’t been tested properly. Same goes for tiny humans. I walk calmly past kids all the time and don’t react, but I’m a big guy and might knock over little ones accidentally, so older kids or teens would probably be a better fit for me.

At home, I’m a quiet, cuddly companion. I sleep in the bedroom (sometimes the bed if you let me), love splashing around in the river or playing with the hose, and I’ve discovered that head rubs are the best. I used to nip and bark to get attention, but now I’ve got much better manners—I’ll gently give you a paw when I want some love (or if you’re 5 minutes late for dinner, no judgment).

I’m still working on a few things—like remembering to be polite when I really want to keep my treat (don’t worry, I’ll trade it for something better!) or building my comfort with car rides and being alone. But I’m smart, sensitive, and eager to learn. With continued structure, love, and patience, I’m going to make someone an incredible best friend.

My ideal home? I’d love a quiet-ish place with people who are around often, who understand that confidence takes time, and who won’t mind my occasional silly zoomies or love of sniffing every leaf on the sidewalk. A backyard is great (even if it’s not huge), another dog buddy would be fun, and daily walks where I can explore new scents are a must.

If you’re looking for a loyal, loving, and slightly goofy best friend with a heart as big as his ears—then I’m your guy. Let’s go explore the world together.

Love,
Tito (Benito)
